Remote data acquisition is simply acquiring data from a remote location, in
most cases remote from a personal computer. Typically, remote data acquisition
is in the range of 10s to 100s of feet, but may also be many miles away from
the host computer.
For remote DAQ applications at a "wired" location distant from where the PC is located, Ethernet data acquisition devices represent a good solution. Ethernet data acquisition devices plug into an Ethernet network and can then be configured from anywhere on that same network. Often, the devices can be monitored and sometimes controlled via a Web browser.
For remote data acquisition within a few miles, serial data acquisition modules
(sometimes referred to as serial I/O modules) can be used to perform
measurement and control functions.
Instead of interfacing with a personal computer’s parallel port or internal
bus, serial data acquisition modules use a serial interface. This interface is
usually an RS-232, or RS-485 serial interface. This interface is used for
two-way communications with the module. It is used to send signals to the
module to control it, as well as to receive the data results from the module.
In other applications, remote data acquisition might be satisfied with a
portable computer or laptop PC by bringing the data acquisition system to the
source of the measurement. This is also referred to as field-test or
